23 B.C. Athletes Make Canadian Paralympic Team
Posted on Tuesday 09 March @ 02:10:12
Taxes Disability InsuranceVancouver – Premier Gordon Campbell congratulated the 23 B.C. athletes named to the Canadian Paralympic Team today.

“On behalf of all British Columbians, congratulations to these elite athletes for being part of Canada’s Paralympic Team,” Premier Campbell said. “These Games are a seminal moment in your achievement-filled athletic careers, and every one of you can go confidently into your competitions knowing that you have the support of an entire country behind you and millions of British Columbians and Canadians cheering you along.”

Athletes who were born or make their home in B.C. represent over 40 per cent of the 55-member Canadian Paralympic Team. More than 1,350 athletes and officials from more than 40 countries will take part in 64 events in five different sports at the X Paralympic Games, which take place March 12 to 21, 2010.

“The strong representation by B.C. athletes on the Paralympic Team is an incredible achievement and is due to years of training, perseverance and dedication to excellence,” said Minister of Healthy Living and Sport Ida Chong. “Their great performances over the past few years leading up to the 2010 Games is a reflection of the Province’s significant investment in our sport system, and the high-quality services our athletes receive from our Provincial Sports Organizations and Canadian Sport Centres network.”

B.C. and Canadian athletes will achieve success at the 2010 Games thanks to support from the Province’s $10-million investment in Own the Podium and $40-million Olympic legacy funding for B.C.’s Integrated Performance System, which support the coaching and sport science needs of our athletes and coaches, as well as through investments in facilities and world-class sporting events such as the Paralympic Training and Development Centre in Kimberley and the 2010 World Wheelchair Rugby Championships at the Richmond Olympic Oval. The funding also provides sport participation opportunities for all British Columbians to be physically active and achieve their own personal bests.

“Some of our athletes have already had a chance to train and compete on our fantastic Paralympic venues, including the Vancouver Olympic/Paralympic Centre curling venue, Whistler Creekside and Paralympic Park,” said Minister of State for the Olympics and ActNow BC Mary McNeil. “I have no doubt that our B.C. athletes are determined to continue the success of our Olympians and we look forward to seeing them on the podium.”
