Premier Gordon Campbell Applauds Approved Destination Status
Posted on Thursday 03 December @ 18:50:51
Medical Life Health InsuranceVancouver – Premier Gordon Campbell congratulated Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Stockwell Day, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway for successfully securing Approved Destination Status (ADS) with China.

“Achieving Approved Destination Status with China is a major economic and cultural step in terms of building our important relationship with China, particularly as we prepare to host the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games,” said Premier Campbell. “I want to thank the Prime Minister for making Approved Destination Status with China a priority and congratulate his government on what will be an important economic opportunity for British Columbia and all of Canada.”

Approved Destination Status allows Chinese tour operators and travel agents to organize tours and advertise Canadian destinations. It also allows British Columbia’s tourism industry to promote directly to tour operators and market B.C. as a destination, including the development of specific promotions. It is anticipated that ADS could increase Chinese tourism to British Columbia by 25 per cent annually over the next few years.

Currently, most visitors from China are business travellers, students, or people visiting friends and relatives. The growth potential with ADS is substantial. For example, within three years of receiving ADS, the number of Chinese visitors to Australia almost doubled. British Columbia’s tourism industry has been preparing for this announcement and is ready to focus on opportunities that deliver new business as quickly as possible.

“As Canada’s Pacific Gateway, British Columbia is in a position to capitalize fully on this new agreement between our nations,” said Premier Campbell. “I also want to thank the Chinese government for accepting Canada’s Approved Destination Status. British Columbia has been working hard to build a trade, investment and cultural relationship with China.”

Premier Campbell has led six missions to China since 2001. In 2007, Premier Campbell announced an agreement with the Province of Guangdong to identify areas for enhanced investment in the tourism sector.

Currently more than half of all Chinese visitors to Canada come to British Columbia. From January to September 2009, British Columbia welcomed 79,845 Chinese visitors, of the 127,787 who came to Canada.
