BRITISH COLUMBIA GIVES $2 MILLION FOR BREAST CANCER PREVENTION

Health Buy Medical Insurance Plan OnlineVANCOUVER – The province continues to support the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation BC/Yukon (CBCF) in their public awareness campaign with $2 million in funding announced by Premier Gordon Campbell today.
“While B.C. women have the lowest mortality and incidence rate for breast cancer in Canada, breast cancer continues to be a significant health issue,” said Campbell.

“It’s so important for every British Columbian woman between the ages of 40 and 69 to understand that having a regular mammogram can help save lives because it detects tumours early and means there are more treatment options and a better chance for a cure. This funding will help the Foundation continue to raise awareness for the need for women to have regular mammograms.”

In British Columbia, an estimated 2,700 new cases of breast cancer will occur this year. There are approximately 27,500 women in the province who have been treated for breast cancer. Over 80 per cent of women diagnosed with breast cancer survive 5 years and longer. The Screening Mammography Program of B.C. is a breast cancer screening service delivered throughout the province by the BC Cancer Agency, in partnership with regional health authorities. Between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2006 there were over 266,000 screening mammograms conducted in the province.

This is the third consecutive year government has supported the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation’s Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign called GOHAVE1. Since 2005, the province has now contributed $4 million towards this initiative. Last year, there was a 25 per cent increase in new bookings compared to the previous year’s new bookings.

Through an $8-million-a-year investment to the BC Cancer Agency, British Columbia was also the first province in Canada to fund the breakthrough drug Herceptin to breast cancer patients who would benefit from this lifesaving drug. Clinical trials of Herceptin have shown that cancer recurrence in women, after completing chemotherapy, was reduced by more than half.

The CBCF BC/Yukon is part of a nationwide volunteer-based organization that works collaboratively to fund, support and advocate for breast research, education, treatment and a positive quality of life for those with breast cancer. This year’s awareness campaign will build on the broad mass media approach and continue to reach out to women and their families, including women from diverse cultural and regions of the province.
